Creative potential seems such a complex word. Almost unattainable and yet we are told each and everyone of us has it. So what is creative potential?

creativityatwork.com defines creativity as “the act of turning new and imaginative ideas into reality. Creativity is characterized by the ability to perceive the world in new ways, to find hidden patterns, to make connections between seemingly unrelated phenomena, and to generate solutions.”

Students at California State University gave their own definitions; Micheal Blythe simplified it by saying that,” Creativity is the ability to develop and express ourselves and our ideas in new ways.”

Patty Harvey says,” Creativity is the ability to express what God put you here to do.”

Brittany Quartermann,” Creativity is using yourself, others, tools of anything else to express yourself.”

Laura Leon,” Creativity is the unique expression of each individual.”

There are various definitions of creativity but we can all agree that they all boil down to one thing: Self.

Self Expression! If that is creativity, what is potential? Potential is someone or something’s ability to develop, achieve or succeed. It is expressing a possibility. It is having or showing the capacity to become. Creative Potential, in my words, would then mean the capacity or ability to become the fullest expression of oneself.

Isn’t that beautiful?? It means we all have creative potential. We all have the potential to be our truest selves. Not someone else’s. Not your parents. Not your friends. Not society’s. But exactly who you were created to be. An original!! And this is different for each person because we are unique individuals with different experiences and personalities. Imagine a world where everyone looked the same, dressed the same, did the same thing- doesn’t that seem like the world in “The Matrix”. But now we are in the beauty of diversity where we can express ourselves in whatever form or way we so wish. But it can only begin when we accept and love ourselves.

It would be a tragedy for us to try and be like someone else. However much we try to act like them, dress like them, talk like them, we will always be one thing: A Copy! So let’s strive to understand who we are and what we are all about. When we do that, only then are we able to be the fullest and truest expression of ourselves. We then would have unlocked our creative potential. We would have created something new: AN ORIGINAL! Because that’s who we are. This is me!
