The Dining Table and 227

Growing up was a fun experience. I was surrounded by love, but I remember the dining table most. Seems weird to think about that now. But I remember that we used to have dinner together as a family no matter what. Even daddy had to come home, have dinner, and then go out.

Dinner was a must and it was all at the dining table. We have moved many houses since it was built in 1993 and yet the same mahogany table has moved with us as it’s a beauty. I work from home so sometimes I work at this table and all the memories rush in.

The Dining table and 227

The ache for home lives in all of us. The safe place where we can go as we are and not be questioned.

Like when I refused to eat my vegetables and I was not allowed to leave the table. Daddy sat with me till midnight and I still refused to eat them but he was also determined. I saw the look on his face and I was sleepy. I wanted my bed so I let go of my stubbornness and finished those veges. Oh, by the way, I love vegetables now and consider a meal without them as not a meal. Times do change indeed.

But now as I am older and we are just two in the house, me and my sis….the dining table doesn’t act like a dining table. It’s a shea butter production site, it’s my office, it’s a piece of decoration. The last time we ate a meal at that table was in January when I had my book launch and the family bought Chinese. The family llloovvvveeesss Chinese. I was recently talking with a friend and when it’s dinner time in his home, all things stop. All people congregate at the table and have dinner and talk.

I miss that. Still figuring out how to do that considering I have dinner by 7 pm and sis comes after 7 pm. I think I will start small. Choose one day out of the week where we must sit at the dining table, just to eat, and talk. The dining table needs to come back to use. Coz it is at the dining table that the bonds of family are strengthened.

Then after we had dinner, we all went to the sitting room…..do people still call it that? Or it’s the living room…..anyway..we go to the sitting room to watch 227. I am so sure some of y’all have no clue what that is.

227

227 is an American sitcom television series that originally aired on NBC from September 14, 1985, to May 6, 1990. The series stars Marla Gibbs as Mary Jenkins, a sharp-tongued, inner-city resident gossip and housewife. Other main characters include her husband Lester (Hal Williams), their daughter Brenda (Regina King), landlady Rose Halloway (Alaina Reed Hall), and neighbors Sandra Clark (Jackée Harry) and Pearl Shay (Helen Martin).

227 followed the lives of people in a middle-class apartment building, 227 Lexington Place (the numerical address from which the sitcom’s name comes), in NortheastWashington, D.C. The show was centered around Mary Jenkins (Marla Gibbs), a nosy and tart-tongued but loving housewife. Her husband, Lester (Hal Williams), had his own construction company, and their daughter, Brenda (Regina King, in her first television acting role), was boy-crazy yet smart and studious. All according to wikipedia

Sandra was crazy and I absolutely loved her and I wanted to be her. Hahaha! And then there was the theme song and it said it ALL

The cast of 227

There’s no place like home
With your family around you you’re never alone
When ya know that you’re loved
You don’t need to roam
Cause there’s no place like home

Time’s are changing everyday
We won’t get by with those same old ways
(No-oooo)
Pulling together, we’ll make it right
With help from our friends, I know we’ll get by

Cause there’s no place like home
With your family around you you’re never alone
When you know that you’re loved
You don’t need to roam
Cause there ain’t no place like
(Better believe it)
There ain’t no place like
(Better believe it)
Cause there ain’t no place like
There’s no place like home
“I mean no place child”.
