Friend Goals? No! Personal Board, Yes!

Do you have a personal board? Yes, you read right! And no, I am not talking of a board for your business or brand. I am talking about a board of directors for yourself as an individual. If you have a perplexed look, do not worry. I had the exact expression on my face when I was asked this question. I was like,” What do you mean? A personal board?” But that was what our coach asked us in the mentoring program and said that we needed to create one. Uuuhhh what??!!

“ A body of men holding themselves accountable to nobody ought not to be trusted by anybody”

Thomas Paine

I was taken aback. Why? Why would I need such a thing? Quickly in true style, I went to research more about it so imagine my shock when I realized that it was not a new thing. So what is a personal board of directors(PBOD)?

Well, according to comptia.org, a board of directors is a group of goal-oriented professionals who work together to guide the mission and processes of a company or organization. A Personal Board of directors, thus, works towards helping you achieve success, offering perspective, advice, and a sounding board for the business of YOU.

Now with that said, how do we go about creating one? It starts with you. What do you want to achieve and what are the steps that you need to get there. Who do you need to help you reach your goal? This board is to provide strategic direction, encouragement and hold you accountable. You have to do the work because the business is YOU.

When you have analyzed where you want to go, who do you choose to be on your personal board of directors? This was a tricky one for me. I couldn’t imagine who I would put there until we were told to divide the business ME into different sectors. Yes!!!! It just got real!

Well, the different sectors are Spiritual, Relational, Intellectual, Physical and Financial. Spiritual is about your spiritual growth as an individual. Relational is how you relate with your spouse, family and community and the larger networks, intellectual is about your personal development, Physical is about your physical body through healthy living like food and exercise and lastly financial is about your financial development through earnings, giving, savings, investments and expenditure.

Friend goals? No! Personal Board

It was not easy to choose because there are people you can not add to this PBOD like your family or your boss because one-your family is biased and two, do you really want to take on that kind of dynamic with your boss? If you have that kind of relationship, go ahead! You also need to be sure that they are willing, will hold you accountable and will be positive but definitely not Yes- people. But it starts with you. You take personal responsibility

“I’m starting with the man in the mirror I’m asking him to change his ways And no message could have been any clearer If you want to make the world a better place Take a look at yourself, and then make a change.”

Man in the Mirror~ Michael Jackson

Personal responsibility is looking at yourself in the mirror and making a change. You need to rewrite your script and the only way you can do it is by taking back your pen. How? Read about it here.

This change can come with a personal board of directors who hold you accountable for the goals that you have set. Friends are important. They take us places but most times you need another set of people- personal board to take us to the next level. So Friend Goals, No! Personal Board, Yes!

When you do that, in a years time, five years or even ten years time, you can look back on the person you have come. A person who has grown not in just one area of your life but all areas of your life. Change is coming. Are you ready? Because that’s who you are. This is me!
